The 1st Annual Artie Awards was a very different affair than the ceremony we witness today.
There were a total of 17 awards given out that evening, including two now-defunct categories: Graphic Design (this being the only year it was presented) and Outstanding Season.
Several categories did not exist as of yet: Supporting Actor in a Musical, Supporting Actress in a Musical & Choreography.
A general Ensemble award was given this year - there weren't separate categories for Musicals & Plays.
The published nominee list at the time did not list theatres for the Ensemble award and certain theatres (buildings) were listed as opposed to companies themselves.

The 4th Annual Artie Awards were held at Jim Kelly's (yes, the Buffalo Bill) now defunct downtown nightclub, Network.
As far as awards themselves, this is the year that the Arties became the awards we know today. The Ensemble category was divided into Musical and Play divisions and the Choreography award was added.
This was the second year in a row where there were two Career Achievement recipients.
This year also marked the first Artie "tie" - in the Actor in a Play category.
